What is diathermy?

Diathermy is a surgical technique that uses high-frequency electric current to cut, coagulate or destroy tissue. It is widely used in various medical disciplines, such as general surgery, gynaecology, dermatology and ENT. Diathermy is known for its precision and minimal blood loss, making it an efficient and safe method in both open and laparoscopic procedures.

How does diathermy work?

In diathermy, electrical energy is conducted through an electrode to the tissue, where it is converted into heat. This heat causes controlled cutting or coagulation of tissue. There are two main forms:

  • Monopolar diathermy: current flows from the active electrode through the body to a neutral plate
  • Bipolar diathermy: current flows between two points on the instrument, without the body itself conducting current

Bipolar diathermy

Bipolar diathermy works with two electrodes located in the same instrument. The current flows exclusively between these points, sparing surrounding tissue. This makes bipolar diathermy suitable for procedures requiring controlled coagulation and high precision, such as microsurgery and procedures in sensitive or moist tissue.

Disposable diathermy instruments

Liber Medical supplies exclusively disposable diathermy instruments, such as diathermy pens, needle and knife electrodes and smoke extraction systems. Our products are sterile packed, intended for single use and designed for maximum safety and performance in the operating theatre.

By choosing disposable solutions, you avoid risk of cross-contamination and save on instrument cleaning and reprocessing. Moreover, our instruments are compatible with common electrosurgery systems such as Valleylab and Erbe.

Applications of diathermy

Diathermy is used in a wide range of medical procedures, including:

  • Cutting of skin, muscle or organ tissue
  • Coagulation of blood vessels to reduce blood loss
  • Removal of tumours or suspicious lesions
  • Gynaecological and dermatological treatments
  • Outpatient and emergency surgeries

The use of disposable diathermy electrodes and pens contributes to an efficient workflow and increased patient safety.

Advantages of disposable diathermy products

  • Sterile packed and ready to use
  • No risk of contamination or reuse errors
  • Constant quality and performance per operation
  • Saving on sterilisation and cleaning processes
  • Suitable for use in ORs, outpatient clinics and emergency departments
